Construction[]

Former to its construction, the site stood on a former steelworks site owned by OS Steel. The steelworks site closed in 1992 and was demolished in 1994. The brownfield was then brought by tInvestments Inc for a sum of $1,400,555 to be developed in to a shopping area which would open in December 2000. Construction started in March 1998.

The location created controversey with its nearby location of Olesk Forest, with NNW then-Premier John Cook threatening to stop construction, however the federal government with the National Territory involvement intervened to continue progress of the mall. The location also put some doubt due to it being in a rural area, tInvestments responded citing strong connections by road and rail to Treien and Stony Stratford Airport and its nearby proximity to Dexsoko, Olesk and Maraton.

The Mall of Europe was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister, Sara Walston on 1 January 2001, as construction was delayed due to a structural review in August 1999.
